On the recordNovember 5, 2003
USDA grants have paid for the purchase of over 50 electronic benefit transfer machines. Now it is up to us to make sure this investment proves to be a worthwhile one. Though there are already positive reports about the use of this new technology in New York farmers' markets, we have an obligation to insure that in the upcoming fiscal year the necessary funds are made available to facilitate the integration of this new equipment, in such a way that we may have an accurate picture of the viability of EBT nationwide. To do anything less is illogical and unfair to the many communities that have openly embraced this pilot program. I therefore request that you support the House language continuing the electronic benefit transfer grant program in conference.
