Mr. Speaker, it is with great sadness that I rise to recognize the victims of the horrific mass shooting that rattled my Birmingham, Alabama, community over the weekend. On Saturday night, just after 11 p.m., 21 people were shot in Birmingham's Five Points South entertainment district, and four lost their lives. Our thoughts are with the families as they endure this unimaginable loss, and we pray for a speedy recovery for those that were injured. James 2:26 teaches us that faith without works is dead. While our thoughts and prayers are important, only by taking meaningful action can we stem this needless loss of life. Elected officials at every level must do all we can to eliminate the epidemic of gun violence that is raging in our communities. It is past time for Congress to act. I ask my colleagues to join me in a moment of silence for the Birmingham victims of Saturday night's mass shooting and their families. ____________________
