Wonderful. Madam Speaker, I rise tonight to offer my thoughts on Black History Month which is observed every year during the month of February. I stand here humble to the reality that many African Americans sacrificed their pride, their joy, their jobs, their dreams and, yes, some their lives so that I and 38 other African-American Members of Congress would be able to stand here today as duly elected officials of the United States House of Representatives. While I am aware of the specific accomplishments of many African Americans, I do feel that it is important to stress that I do not think that there should be a Black History Month. I understand the motive behind observing and acknowledging the contributions of African Americans to this great country. However, I feel strongly that we must move away from being contained in a box. Every day should be African-American day. Every week should be African-American week. And every month should be African-American month.
