I think everyone can see there was no ill intent behind this ribbing of the new lord chancellor – a role I once filled and which comes with immense challenges thanks to the vandalism inflicted on our justice system by the last Conservative government.

In a more dangerous world, we are faced by threats from without and within that target our democracy and our way of life.
My message to the Eritrean government is simple: take back your nationals or face a complete ban on your citizens entering the UK.
We owe it to them and to everyone who believes in a fair and open country to ensure that those who serve at all levels receive the protection they deserve.
