We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent, but neither are we a lawless country. We are a civil society. An order must prevail. There's the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos.

Destroying property is not a peaceful protest. It's against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations, none of this is a peaceful protest.

I would say there is a lesson here for both of us, and one of those is to make clear I am always ready to take your calls, your meeting, whatever you want and engage.

But my hope is, on a serious note, my hope is that the issues we just discussed... we can keep at it today and see if we can't find a way to yes that is reasonable and acceptable to all of us.
