I'll have to correct some of the ways I've been saying things then because I've been led to believe maybe some of the immunities we have comes because we've gotten the seasonal flu shots over the last few years, but that's not it.

I think we have to be more positive in our approach on this, and on looking at these potential conflicts of interest.

We can change our minds. It's occurred to me that, yes, we initially put that out there to be 2 years, but maybe we might want to think about making an exception for NIH.

I personally, as a member of this subcommittee, support additional funding for NIH research, but in particular, today just for a few minutes, I would like to emphasize the importance of accelerating research in the area of cystic fibrosis.

I just think you're doing an outstanding job at NIH, all of you.

I want to know if that makes sense.

The scientific advances that result from this funding will probably take some time to gauge but in the meantime, I expect it to have a tremendous impact on the economy.

I will have healthcare reform behind us, maybe a little bit more time.

I don't want any of you here at the table to take this wrongly, but all of this money won't just go to Bethesda.

Every time a researcher gets a grant, it supports an average of six or seven jobs.

These are exciting times for NIH. After several years of stagnant funding, the Recovery Act has breathed new life into the field of biomedical research.

How do we preserve free enterprise, how do we preserve the rights of property, the rights of contract, the rights of franchise?

We passed, over my objection, the TARP funding last fall, the $780 billion.

I hope we don't end up subsidizing the shipping of American jobs to other countries.

[O]ur capacity to meet this extraordinary need [of global hunger] must start with a commitment to build a strong economy here in the United States. Without that strong economy, we cannot make a strong commitment to International Food Aid.

He wants to end childhood hunger by 2015. He is committed to it. We are committed to it.

I think we have done a reasonably good job of getting a significant amount of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act money out.
