First, if my friend, Congressman Green, wouldn't mind staying a moment, I would like to offer a few comments on what you said. Unfortunately, I missed the larger body of your talk, but I would like to add a few things, if you don't mind.

Because they were deeply touched, wounded, if you will, by this story. How could this happen to a little child? But I think you rightfully acknowledge that those days are behind us. And through all of the difficulties, toils and struggles…

I appreciate your views on that, and I agree with your views.

Both the Congress and the administration need to follow this up. This is an extraordinary interview, the content is important.

I don't know for certain that there was involvement. I know for certain there's a plenty smoked gun line around the room and this happens to be the latest one.

I think it is a little confusing when we hear about our deterrent described as unaffordable, and to me the alternative, letting that deterrent age out--that has the unaffordable cost to us.

There's a perception that it is the military's responsibility to fix the problem. Problems are not fixed by militaries.

We need to step forward and really see that through if we are going to continue to enjoy the security that we have as a country.

Do you have specific proposals that the commission recommended?

I came into this commission believing that it's likely we have a real problem with pay and benefits.

Our goal is to improve the quality of paying benefits for our military.

I think that would be a wrong thing to do and send a terrible signal.

Well, first of all, I think you would be having a difficult time retraining men and women to serve in the military had this Congress not made all of the changes that it made since we have been fighting this war for the last 14 years.

Strike 'probably.' It was you and the executive.

It would be unfair to identify military retirement as the big problem, because it isn't. The big problem is Social Security and Medicare.

I think that it would be a wrong thing to do and send a terrible signal.

I think the moment that ends, no matter what you pay men and women, they are not going to sign up.
