But all of us here at home remember you with gratitude.

Peace comes only to those who work for it and are ready to defend it.

Those same blessings depend upon you today.

We too must have the courage to confront complexity, never permitting it to sever the nerve of action or dull the edge of faith.

Our emphasis is going to be this next 4 years just as it was when the Republic of Texas was founded.

It can be said of him, as Thomas Jefferson said of George Washington: 'Never did nature and fortune combine more perfectly to make a man great, and to place him in everlasting remembrance.'

In his thousand days of our leadership, President Kennedy made decisions which will be remembered and respected for a thousand years.

In death he has entered and enriched it.

He belongs to the ages.

First, I am proud I am a free man.

Third, I am proud I am a public servant.

Second, I am proud I am an American.

It is the only ruler that free men recognize and the only dictator that free men desire.

Now, Therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, do proclaim Sunday, November twenty second, 1964, a day of national rededication.

I do not interpret the selection as a mandate to any reckless, novel, dangerous, or unique course.

I want very much to be President of all of the people.
