Surely you are not afraid to have your side of this dispute examined in the public interest.

What we face today is not a depression, and if we follow the right course, it will not become a depression.

Our national economy is protected by important economic reforms which the Government has adopted over the last 16 years.

I want to talk to you tonight about our country, about its future, and about its importance to the hopes and aspirations of all mankind.

Our goal is maximum employment and production.

The history of the United States is a story of constant economic growth and expansion.

We must therefore expand our programs of social security, education, health, and housing.

Thank you for your telegram informing me of the action of your policy committee in accepting my proposal to continue work and present your side of dispute to the board I am appointing.

I earnestly request all parties to the dispute to accept this proposal and will appreciate a prompt reply.

The adjustment process has been rendered less difficult by the prudent actions of many groups and individuals in our business system.

This is supplementary to the Economic Report of the President of January 7, 1949, and is transmitted in accordance with section 3 (b) of the Employment Act of 1946.

While the mining industry differs in many respects from other industries, I find no valid basis for the discrimination proposed by H.R. 834.

We should not, however, be lulled into a false sense of security by these favorable aspects of the situation.

Approval of this bill would likely result in demands by many other classes of persons for amendments which would grant similar relief to them.

It is with these considerations in mind that I transmit to the Congress a brief summary of the economic situation and recommendations for action at this time.
