We and our allies this afternoon--with equal reluctance--are employing police power in Vietnam.

The measure of our own success will be the extent to which we free our people to realize what their imagination and energy can achieve.

We Americans do not believe in moral double-bookkeeping--and so today we stand before the world asking only that others employ a similar, single standard of evaluation.

It reaffirms its quest for that creativity in the international arena which will make the United Nations the instrument of world order, of world peace, and of world justice.

I believe that a great society can master its dilemmas.

The United States reaffirms its adherence to the rule of law in the world, as well as in the Nation.

What we accomplish around the world will be shaped in large part by what we are and what we become at home.

A nation, like an individual, must earn the right to have its professions of idealism taken seriously.

The tree must be judged by the fruit.

We are the first generation to know with certainty that life will be different for our children, and even for ourselves, in a few years' time.

By such a standard, the appointment of Nicholas Katzenbach as the Under Secretary of State demonstrates that what we are at home demonstrates what we are abroad.

Now, Therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, do hereby set aside Wednesday, October 19, 1966, as a National Day of Prayer.

I urge civic and service organizations, schools, public bodies, and the media of public information in every community to join in observing White Cane Safety Day.
