I don't think any of us in this room intended for this bill to cause foreclosures for people who happen to live near a river or near a mountain.
For an agency whose initial leader once touted that, 'This consumer bureau belongs to the public, and we are building it right out in the open there for anyone to see,' the refusal to answer this simple question is troubling.
The American people have a right to know how a government agency is collecting and using their personal financial data.
So far, the CFPB has declined to provide, I believe, concrete answers to these questions, and I hope we get some of those answers on record today.
This witch hunt is an insult to the American people and to the very freedoms that are at the heart of our Nation's democracy.
I fear, and I have heard this anecdotally, that this approach of 'Washington knows best' will harm the very people that the rule seeks to help.
I would encourage that we work toward a sustainable housing finance system which promotes a broader private marketplace.
The current regulatory structure does not foster this type of environment, and expansive regulations being implemented only add to uncertainty.
These institutions are critical to the flow of credit in our communities across the Nation.
