This is an opportunity to install safeguards that we need to have in place to give people confidence that there’s only one factor in every decision that’s made, and that’s what’s best for the people of the city.

I recognize the immense responsibility I hold as governor and the constitutional powers granted to this office.

In the 235 years of New York State history, these powers have never been utilized to remove a duly-elected mayor.

I will not be signing an extradition order that came from the governor of Louisiana — not now, not ever.

Robert Brooks should be alive today.

The brutal attack on Mr. Brooks was sickening, and I immediately moved to terminate the employment of those involved.

The will of the voters and the supremacy and sanctity of democratic elections preclude me from any other action.
