The Public Record
Max Baucus is a former U.S. Senator from Montana, serving from 1978 to 2014. A member of the Democratic Party, Baucus was known for his work on health care reform and tax policy. He played a significant role in the passage of the Affordable Care Act and was a key advocate for various economic initiatives during his tenure. Baucus also served as the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, where he influenced legislation related to taxation and trade. After leaving the Senate, he was appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to China, where he focused on strengthening U.S.-China relations.
I might say, Madam Chairman, that we are here, and the interest we Montanans have is pretty deep, especially as we transition to a clean energy economy, and we are concerned about transportation and also international actions.
Status quo is killing us, and let's make this jump because if we do it, it is going to be the best thing.
Our State has a lot to gain and a lot to potentially lose from this transition if it is not properly structured.
Montana's wind energy potential ranges from good to excellent to superb, but it lacks some of the transmission infrastructure required to carry that renewable resource to market.
But the status quo is trouble because the Clean Air Act is going to have to be implemented.
We have a moral obligation to leave it in as good a shape or better shape than we found it.
Senator Baucus here in the Senate and Congressman Thompson in the House are now sponsoring legislation to make those incentives permanent.
Max Baucus has given a deadline of 10:00 a.m. Wednesday for Republicans to come up with a counter-proposal.
