I appreciate the opportunity to discuss the Department's performance with and responsibility to veterans preference in Federal government hiring.
Some veterans think that because of veterans preference, that they will automatically be hired in the Federal services. That is not the case.
I think too often the media headlines level broad accusation against all VA employees, not just the ones who are--have bad performance issues.
A remarkable progress has been made by the VA to meet this challenge, but there is much more that still has to be done.
