Like all my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I was sick when I learned of the tragic shooting in Orlando. Since Sunday, like so many people, my thoughts have been with the families and with the friends of the victims, with the LGBT community, with the people of Orlando, and with all Americans who are mourning the loss of loved ones at the hands of senseless gun violence. My thoughts are also with the parents across our Nation. We have to explain to our kids, how can something like this happen in our country? We were elected in this Chamber to do a job--to discuss issues, to debate them, and to vote on legislation that makes our communities and our country safer. I came to the floor tonight to participate in this discussion because we have a job to do and we have action to take. I thank Senator Murphy for leading this. I am a supporter of the Second Amendment. I am also someone who believes it is reasonable for all of us to consider smart and responsible ways to reduce gun violence. Those things are not in opposition to each other. Since I have come to the Senate, we have talked about mass shootings in Orlando, in San Bernardino, in Charleston, and in Newtown, CT, the Senator's home State. The truth is, there is gun violence across this country every single day. No State is immune, including my home State of Indiana.…
