Daniel Akaka was a prominent Democratic politician from Hawaii who served as a United States Senator from 1990 to 2012. Born on September 11, 1924, Akaka was the first Native Hawaiian to serve in the U.S. Senate. Throughout his tenure, he was known for his advocacy on issues such as education, veterans' affairs, and Native Hawaiian rights. He played a significant role in promoting the Community Reinvestment Act and was a strong supporter of expanding access to financial services for underserved communities.
I am hopeful that we will be able to increase the resources available for the EEE program.
I very much appreciate that President Obama includes financial literacy in his platform to help working families.
Should there be further legislation that would help the cause, we certainly want to consider that as well.
It is important that we continue to educate, protect, and empower consumers.
Ultimately, the concern would be that the most favorable situation be created for the overall family.
S. 475, if enacted, would place a spouse in a more advantageous position to servicemembers on the question of payment of state taxes.
I look forward to working with you and the Members of this Committee to advance legislation that will help improve the lives of servicemembers, veterans, and their families.
It stands to reason--and I believe it happens in practice--that an active duty servicemember who enters the service in New York and is first stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, will retain his residency in New York.
I hope this would help injured servicemembers experience a more seamless transition from active duty to civilian life.
