I would like to see this committee do what it can to help those American dreams come true, and student loans are one tool that allow students and families to pursue that dream.
The private sector is a stable source of capital. It is one that has served millions of students and families for decades.
The administration has argued that the FFEL program is on life support and does not provide a stable source of capital.
No, it is only in the student loan market where political forces are taking advantage of economic peril to create a federal monopoly.
Congress has specifically mandated through law that certain 'high-need' professions are eligible for loan cancellation under the currently structured Perkins Loan program.
If that teacher was on a worldwide kind of registry where she was involved in some child abuse, then maybe the school would look at it.
I believe this--because in my case, the teacher is put on a registry in Texas, but she was able to go to another state.
And so I introduced a bill last Congress, the Positive Behavior for Effective Schools Act...
I look forward to hearing both from the Inspector General and OSHA itself on their views about whether this program should be continued, modified, expanded, or eliminated.
