I rise in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin and Michael Collins.

Planning for the first human landing on the moon began in April 1957 and in July 1960, NASA named the program 'Project Apollo' with five goals.

Moonfest 1999 is an event blending history, education and family entertainment together in celebration of one of the greatest achievements of the 20th Century.

This historic landing, and the many that followed, was achieved in large part by the dedication and creativity of several California aerospace corporations and their subcontractors.

As a result of her tireless efforts, classrooms that were once too hot, have been retrofitted with air conditioners creating a more conducive learning environment for the school children.

Barbara understood, however, that more than cooling the classrooms would have to be done to help our children succeed.
