The U.S. must have capable partners, especially in the developing world, where states are often too weak to defend themselves fully.

I am very interested in your calling for the next administration to have an assistant to the president who would expressly be focused on building public-private partnerships and countering violent extremism goals.

And I would argue that to the extent elected officials at the Federal, state and local levels embrace and engage with and represent the American Muslim community, the more likely we are to be successful.

Where it is appropriate, sure, we need that. We want to make sure that it is done thoughtfully and in ways that it can actually contribute.
