Earlier today, I joined some of our colleagues before the Supreme Court in oral argument on the Voting Rights Act and its constitutional challenge.

Voting rights, of course, are fundamental.

I think he is eminently qualified.

We would urge the nominees to try to answer those questions as promptly as possible.

We look to the Federal Government, the Justice Department, as providing the strength to fight those issues.

Well, I thank you. That is a very meaningful response, and we all do know about those causes.

We think everyone has an obligation to--particularly lawyers.

I commend you for the legislation that you have introduced.

I encourage you, and Mr. Chairman, thank you for proposing that we use stimulus dollars to keep some of these lines and services operational.

I do have a concern. I know you hopefully have received a letter that Steny Hoyer and I and Donna Edwards sent to you and your team about the cuts that have been made in Metrobus in the suburban Maryland area.

The persistence of any element of unequal treatment that prevents any American from achieving the full measure of her potential, while enjoying the full benefits of the rights guaranteed by our Constitution, is simply unacceptable.
