It affords me much satisfaction to say that it was produced by no carelessness or inattention on the part of the officers and crew of the Princeton, but must be set down as one of those casualties which to a greater or less degree attend upon every service.
In compliance with the request contained in the accompanying letter from the governor of the State of Kentucky, I herewith transmit certain resolutions adopted by the legislature of that State, in relation to a digest of the decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States.
To the House of Representatives:In compliance with your resolution of the 15th December, 1843, requesting 'such information as may be on file in any of the Departments relative to the formation of a junction between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans,' I transmit herewith a letter from the Secretary of State, with accompanying documents, in relation thereto.
I will also add that it in no measure detracts from the value of the improvement contemplated in the construction of the Princeton or from the merits of her brave and distinguished commander and projector.
