Mr. Speaker, I rise today in remembrance of a great lady from our district, Elizabeth Garrett, Cornell University President. Ms. Garrett lost her battle with cancer on March 6, 2016, at the age of 52. We were all deeply saddened, Mr. Speaker, to learn of her passing, and our hearts go out to her loved ones, including her husband, her two step-daughters, her parents, and her sister. Mr. Speaker, following a distinguished career where she served as legislative director and tax counsel for Senator David L. Boren of Oklahoma and served as a clerk for United States Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, she rose through the ranks of academia to become Cornell University's first female president. We are very proud of President Garrett. She was a remarkable leader who led our community in the right direction. Mr. Speaker, I join with all of those in the 23rd Congressional District to extend our condolences and our thoughts and prayers to her family and to our entire community. ____________________
