[Mr. DeMint] moves to commit the bill H.R. 4872 to the Committee on Finance of the Senate with instructions to report the same back to the Senate within 1 day with changes that ensure that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (including the amendments made by such Act) does not prohibit Americans from purchasing health insurance across State lines. Mr. DeMINT. Madam President, this motion will ensure that the new government health regime that has just been made law will not prohibit Americans from purchasing private health insurance plans across State lines without going through a government exchange. Throughout this yearlong health care debate, we have talked about the importance of competition between insurance companies, how it could bring accountability and lower costs. Yet the laws of the land have actually created State-by-State monopolies that have not been responsive to the American people and have run up costs. This motion could change that, creating hundred of choices, for Americans all across our Nation, with insurance companies competing for their business.…
