Mr. Speaker, I rise today to express my opposition to the Republican budget because of the way that it treats our Nation's veterans. As I have said during the Budget Committee debates, the Republican proposal does not provide our past and present servicemembers with the resources they need upon their return. Protecting our veterans is not an option--it is our duty. We owe it to our veterans to provide them with quality health care, education, job training, and the long-term treatment they have earned through their service to our Nation. It is more than just a moral obligation. It is also a wise investment in America's future. The Greatest Generation was not called ``the Greatest Generation'' in 1946. That term didn't come about until the 1990s. It had as much to do with what our veterans of World War II did after the war, when they came home, as with what they did in it. To ensure success for today's veterans, we need to do much better than the Republican proposal. The SPEAKER pro tempore. The time of the gentleman has expired.
