“Madam Speaker, I rise today to honor a patriot of the highest order, Vietnam war veteran Bruce Bigelow. Mr. Bigelow is a true hero who exemplifies the highest ideals of service and sacrifice. It was my profound honor to present him with the Purple Heart medal for his heroic service when I visited him in Sierra Vista last fall. The Purple Heart is a distinguished award given to those who have been wounded or killed in action while serving our Nation, and it symbolizes the immense sacrifices they made to preserve our freedoms and way of life. Mr. Bigelow served two tours in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam from 1966 to 1971. In the course of his service, Mr. Bigelow was awarded numerous recognitions and honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Rifle Marksman badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and certainly, not least of these, the Purple Heart. His courage is a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who have answered duty's call to wear the uniform as a member of our Armed Forces. I had the privilege of pinning this Purple Heart on him and thanking him for his service to our Nation in front of his family and his friends. He told me he was honored, but truth be told, the honor was all mine.
