Again, I'd like you to speak to that. We've been down this road before over the last 25 or 30 years that I've been on this subcommittee, in saying that NIH really ought to do this on a peer-reviewed basis.

I think a society ultimately will be judged by the ways in which, even in difficult times, priorities are chosen.

Well, I want to thank you all for being here, again, for another enlightening session.

But in recent years, our Nation's status in that regard has been threatened.

When you consider how much funding was needed to keep up with inflation, the cut was more like $1.3 billion.

If IPAB should survive I think we might want to think about a more formal data transmission between NIH and IPAB.

Fortunately, the Senate rejected that plan.

We appreciate the fact that you have convened this hearing and given us a chance to tell some of that story.

I hope that witnesses can explain the impact of a combined AT&T/T-Mobile will have on consumers through prices, competition, and access.

Clearly this is a very important matter that is going to get more attention as time goes on.

This will have to be my last question, and for Mr. Stephenson and Mr. Hesse: In 2008, the Justice Department and the FCC approved a merger between Verizon Wireless and the rural carrier Alltel.

So I want to hear how the proposed merger will help residents in my State gain access to faster and more dependable services.

As I said in my opening comment, my State is rural, and there are some parts of my State where receiving consistent telephone service is questionable.
