This injustice to tribes has been acknowledged on multiple occasions by the Supreme Court, most recently the Ramah Navajo decision.

It is shameful that IHS is the only direct Federal medical service agency not exempted in some way from sequestration.

What sequestration did is, in some respects the Budget Control Act attempted to protect the most vulnerable, and it did not do that in Indian Country.

I strongly encourage the Administration to seriously engage tribal leaders on this issue and to work with Congress and Indian Country.

But I think it points to a broader issue for me that I think is important about this hearing, which is we know that there are economic benefits.
