I appreciate the chance to come here to Battle Creek and also to the State of Michigan in this campaign for the Presidency of the United States.

My philosophy is a progressive one.

But if He has a place and a part for us, I believe we are ready.

I believe it is important that this country have new leadership.

I believe that parties are important.

What we are speaks far louder than what we say we are.

I believe that we stand for rebuilding the United States, for developing our economy, for moving ahead here at home, and building our strength around the world.

I do not believe that this administration has met its responsibilities in the great areas of freedom.

But the Democratic Party does have a program - a program which will reverse the downward trend of the past 8 years.

We must do better!

<I am glad to be here with a young and progressive figure from the State of Michigan, who I believe will succeed Mennen Williams as a great Governor, who will lead Michigan forward - John Swainson.

I believe that an America that understands the importance of 'lifelong learning' will be able to deal with those problems more wisely and more vigorously.
